The Department of Horticulture was established soon after the B.Sc. (Ag.) degree (two years) programme was approved by the University of Allahabad in the year 1932 under the guidance of Prof. W. B. Hayes. It is the pioneering department in horticultural education, research and extension in India. The post-graduation programme in horticulture leading to M.Sc. (Ag.) degree was started in 1970. The Department under Naini Agricultural Institute started offering B.Sc. (Hons.) Horticulture programme in 2011. Presently, specialized post graduate programme such as M.Sc. Ag. Horticulture (Vegetable Science), M.Sc. Ag. Horticulture (Fruit Science) and M.Sc. Ag. Horticulture (Floriculture and landscaping) are being offered to the undergraduate students of Agriculture and Horticulture. Doctoral degree programmes are also being offered in these subjects. The Department of Horticulture strives to cater to the needs of farming community by organizing farmers training, farmers fair and technology demonstration in farmers field. The Department focuses its research activities based on research priorities of the State and the Nation.
